Herbs for Healing

ANTI-OXIDANT & ANTI-ANXIETY HERBS

Herbs are a great addition to your daily regime for yourself and your little ones if they suffer from anxiety, stress or chronic inflammation. Herbs work differently than food or supplements. They heal and restore balance on a cellular level. As herbs have their own energy, some consider them energy medicine as well.

I love adding herbs to our daily rituals. As most know I am fond of cooking with them. But I also like to raise the nutritional value of water, juices, teas, smoothies (any liquids really!) with a few drops of these tinctures.

Here is a breakdown of my favourite herbal remedies and what I use them for:

Lemon Balm: A member of the mint family, this is a calming herb and a great remedy to relieve stress and anxiety. Specially for our children that are in and out of therapies, go through multiple transitions in a day, adding this to the evening ritual brings calmness and restores the mood. Perfect for a restful sleep. Lemon balm also contains rosmarinic acid which is a powerful anti-oxidant. Rosmarinic works to reduce the histamine load if you or your child struggles with allergies, eczema or other histamine sensitivities.

Gotu Kola : A herb from the parsley family, according to recent studies helps in brain functioning, improves memory and has anti-anxiety effect. Considered a rejuvenative nervine its recommended for balancing the nervous system. This herb has been used in Ayurvedic medicine by traditional healers for ages.

Chinese Skullcap: A member of the mint family, skullcap is rich in antioxidants. We consume diets that are loaded with inflammatory oils and toxins, use of anti-oxidants keeps the oxidative stress low. Its main properties are to reduce anxiety, inflammation and the reason why its such a favourite is because its a neuro-protector, it helps protect the brain and boosts learning. It even brings relief to allergies and is great for those with histamine sensitivities or allergies.

Japanese Knotweed: This herb can be easily missed but its benefits will amaze you. Native to East Asia, this herb has a positive impact on cognition and is frequently used in dementia. The herb is a rich source of antioxidant Resveratrol which provides protection against neurodegeneration and keeps brain pathways energized. Its also used to provide relief to histamine sensitivity.

While there is no silver bullet and short-cuts to healing, expanding your knowledge of herbs and super-foods will only help you identify and address health issues in yourself and your little ones deeply and holistically.

Happy Healing !
