Autism & Nutritional Deficiencies
I still remember how I felt sitting in our Developmental Paediatrician’s office. I felt his voice come from a long tunnel when he informed us about the diagnosis.
How can this happen ? Why does this happen ? I had a million questions but I couldn’t vocalize them between the shock and the dread.
It would be many months later that I would learn about this approach to Autism. For example, is it really sleep regression or is there an issue with circadian rhythm? Is there a magnesium deficiency ? Do the melatonin levels need to be supported with nutrients ? How come my doctor didn’t mention that ?
Setting our children up for success means everything when they start off with significant delays. Here are some nutrients you should know about:
Vitamin A & Omega3: Dr Mary Megson published an article about damaged G proteins and her use of the cis form of vitamin A in cod liver oil to improve social skills in autism. To learn more about Omega3, see my pinned reel.
Vitamin B’s: These support the methylation cycle, something which is usually impaired for children on the spectrum. The notable one is B12 which has been found to boost cognition and speech for children who may not be progressing in therapies.
Vitamin D: it’s such a simple thing to check and an easy one to miss. Surprisingly most of our children are deficient in this important nutrient that supports mood, anxiety and can reduce hyperactive behaviour.
Magnesium: I don’t know who isn’t deficient in magnesium - a nutrient that can help improve mood, sleep and bring a sense of calmness. Infact I highly recommend it for stressed out moms. See my bio for link to purchase from my recommendations.
Zinc: A month after supplementing this I felt so relieved to see my child was consuming various foods with interest ! The food therapist we went to was sadly not much help.
I hope I have saved you some time and given you something to think about. Dm me for questions or book a session with me to discuss how you can benefit from these.
